CROATIA / HRVATSKA 2010

11 million tourists in 2009 for a total population of 4.5 million. Over 1900 km of seaside, counting the ones around the 1244 islands. Skyhigh real estate prices in Dubrovnik. Feeling very much like southern Italy with exactly the same type of dry and quite hot weather in July and August, only thing different they speak croatian that sounds like dobro utro dobr dan dovidenje molem. You'll hit Ulaz (Entrance) and Izlaz (Exit) quite fequently so they might come handy. Hvala pronounced hh-vallah is croatian for thanks. And one of the key words crno vino stands for UB40's red red wine.

There's 3 dialects of the croatian language spoken depeding on the geographical area. Croatian is spoken within a few other former yugoslav republics as well as in Romania's Caras Severin county and Italy's Molise region.

The few basic words are easy to catch, it's gonna be tougher with words consisting of a tough to pronounce consonants sequence of which Krk seems to be an easy sell. Otherwise no communication issues anywhere along the Dalmatian Coast, everyone seems to speak English, sometimes a surprisingly good one. Very friendly people and great services, only tiny negative the habit of cutting lines for getting into the bus, boarding planes, even buying tickets at the newspaper stands, however don't be surprised to notice Italian or Spanish tourists are the rotten ones.

There are unfortunately no low cost flights out of Bucharest towards any of the m ajor destinations in Croatia, not even direct flights therefore we had to stop over in Munich on the way to Zagreb. Didn't bother to search too much for an alternate low cost two-piece flight either frankly speaking since it didn't seem to be worth it.

Zagreb seemed to be the tiniest airport where I had ever landed, comparable sizewize to Saguenay airport in Quebec or Dominican Republic's Punta Cana, Dubrovnik airport being just a tad larger.

Obscenely expensive rental car, however the Skoda Oktavia proved to be a very enjoyable ride, rather comfy and quite economic on Diesel fuel. Good thing though we got rid of it by the end of the second day and public transportation as limited as we had needed it proved to be flawless.
